Freighter trip, August 2010
There she is!
This is where we parked the car. They sell charts, books, deliver mail to ships, and run the pilot boat. Not exactly in the nicest part of town but they have a fenced lot...
Blast furnace at the Severstal River Rouge steel mill where we met the boat. This used to be owned by Ford.
Exhaust stack from the blast furnace. You can only see this at night. Don't ask what they are burning in there...
Passing another ship in Lake Erie.
CSX Toledo coal dock & loading equipment. The machinery here flips over 2 loaded hopper cars at a time and dumps the contents onto a conveyor, which loads the coal into the ship via the apparatus you see here.
Power plant in Monroe, MI.
Unloading coal at the power plant in Monroe, MI.
Looks like they're stockpiling for winter when the ships can't run.
Emptying the cargo hold. In the bad old days they had to do this with huge shovels mounted on the dock. Now everything is unloaded by a conveyor system built into the boat.
The guest bedroom. Looks like an old motel, only it floats...
Guest bedroom from another angle.
